Report: Norman should be dropped as CEO of LIV Golf
Greg Norman has faced a barrage of criticism in recent days after comments he made that appeared to downplay the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Now, according to a prominent reporter, his days as the frontman of the LIV Golf Invitational series backed by Saudi Arabia could be counted.
In a Q&A on The Fire Pit Collective, prominent golf journalist and author of unauthorized biography Phil Mickelson, Alan Shipnuck, says he thinks Norman could be replaced. In response to a question about Mickelson’s association with the show, Shipnuck said: “A top Tour agent recently confided that he heard Norman was at odds with the Saudis, which would be another wild development. If a change of direction is imminent with LIV Golf, it would be all the more reason for Mickelson to forfeit the PGA Championship and take more time to assess a chaotic situation.
Last week, at a media day ahead of the inaugural series starting June 9 at the Centurion Club near London, Norman said of Khassoggi’s murder: ‘Everybody recognized him, didn’t they? ? have read, continue on what you have reported. Take ownership, whatever it is. Look, we’ve all made mistakes and you just want to learn from those mistakes and how you can fix them in the future.
The comments drew substantial backlash, including from Amnesty International, which in an exclusive to The Guardian condemned them as “wrong and gravely misguided”. LIV Golf Investments responded to the remarks in a statement to Golf Monthly, which read: “The killing of Jamal Khashoggi was reprehensible. Everyone agrees on this, including Greg and he has said so many times before. .a force for good around the world and can help make progress towards positive change. That’s why he’s so excited about LIV and that’s what he meant.
Still, if Shipnuck’s source is correct, it looks like Norman’s controversial tenure as CEO of LIV Golf may soon be coming to an end. If that happened, it would mark another twist in the long-running saga.
We have contacted LIV Golf and are awaiting their response.
